Dyslexia
What is Dyslexia?
“Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.”

Common Signs of Dyslexia
- Difficulty understanding directions
- Omitting sounds or letters when reading and writing
- Reading words and letters in the wrong order
- Difficulty with reading comprehension
- Letter and/or number reversals
- Trouble proofreading and correcting work
- Difficulty with rhyming
- Confusion of left and right
- Difficulty finding the right word to use
- Inability to differentiate between speech sounds

What type of dyslexia therapy program is used?
Orton-Gillingham Approach (Structured Literacy)
Student Strong uses the Orton-Gillingham approach. This is a structured, sequential, multi-sensory approach to the English language, and it combines all three learning modalities: auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. The program offers a daily built-in review and addresses all areas of reading and language including phonological awareness, reading comprehension, fluency, spelling, handwriting, grammar, and written expression.
